Academician Dominic Foo Shares Insights into the Application of Process Integration Technologies in Carbon Capture and Storage

The 82ndsession of the Yangtze Lecture Forum was held on the morning of December 16 at the Academic Lecture Hall of the Wuhan Campus. Professor Dominic Foo, an Academician of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and Professor at the University of Nottingham Malaysia, delivered an academic lecture entitled “Applications of Process Integration Technologies in Carbon Capture and Storage”. More than 200 faculty members and students attended the lecture, including Vice President Zhao Hui, representatives from the Institute of Science and Technology Development, the School of Petroleum Engineering, the Graduate School, and related schools and departments. The lecture was chaired by Professor Shi Baocheng, Assistant Dean of the School of Petroleum Engineering.

During the lecture, Academician Foo pointed out that the power sector remains one of the major sources of global carbon dioxide emissions. In 2023, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions reached 37.4Gt, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.1%.

Against the backdrop of continuously rising global energy demand, balancing economic and social development with carbon emission control has become a major challenge worldwide. Academician Foo provided a comprehensive overview of the applications of Process Integration technologies in energy system optimization and regional energy planning, with a particular focus on recent advances in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and the deployment of negative emission technologies.

Using engineering tools such as carbon emission Pinch Analysis, Academician Foo demonstrated how carbon emissions can be controlled within predetermined limits while meeting the energy demands of cities and countries. He emphasized that building a sustainable energy system cannot rely on a single technology; instead, it requires the coordinated integration of multiple approaches, including renewable energy utilization, energy efficiency improvement, and CCS.

During the Q&A session, faculty members and students engaged in extensive discussions with Academician Foo on topics including carbon neutrality pathways, industrial emission reduction strategies, and technology implementation. Academician Foo patiently addressed questions regarding research and practical challenges, shared the latest developments in international research and potential collaboration opportunities. The session was marked by a vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic applause.

Following the lecture, Vice President Zhao Hui presented Academician Foo with a commemorative cup of the Yangtze Lecture Forum, and student representatives presented flowers to express their appreciation.
