Historical Evolution
Yangtze University was established in May 2003 with the approval of the Ministry of Education and authorization by the Hubei Provincial People’s Government, through the merger of four institutions: Jianghan Petroleum Institute, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College, and Hubei Provincial Medical College for Health Professionals.
1.Former Jianghan Petroleum Institute
• Originated from Beijing Petroleum Industry College (founded in 1950)
• Commenced undergraduate education in 1978, administered by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC)
• Transferred to Hubei Province’s management in 2000 under the central-local joint development framework
2.Former Hubei Agricultural College
• Evolved from Huazhong Agricultural College, Jingzhou Branch (established in 1977)
• Accredited as a full-time undergraduate institution by the State Education Commission in 1989
3.Former Jingzhou Normal College
• Traced to Hubei 4th District Junior Normal School (founded in 1936)
• Renamed Huazhong Normal College, Jingzhou Branch (1977)
• Restructured as Jingzhou Normal College with approval from the Ministry of Education in 1999
4.Former Hubei Provincial Medical College for Health Professionals
• Began as Hubei Provincial Shashi Health School (established in 1951)
• Became Wuhan Medical College, Jingzhou Branch (1977)
• Renamed Hubei Provincial Medical College for Health Professionals (1984)

• Located in Jingzhou City – a historical capital of the Chu Kingdom during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).
