cademicians and Experts Gather at Yangtze University to Explore Frontiers in Unconventional Oil and Gas Logging Technologies

The Second Yangtze International Forum on Innovation in Petrophysics and Logging Technologies for Unconventional Reservoirs and the Sixth Academic Annual Meeting of the Southwest Chapter of the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA-SW) were held from January 31 to February 2 at the East Campus of Yangtze University. Co-organized by Yangtze University and the Southwest Chapter of SPWLA, the event brought together more than 300 experts and scholars from 25 universities and 28 research institutes and enterprises at home and abroad, focusing on cutting-edge developments in the exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, the forum provided a platform for participants to exchange insights, discuss technological advances, share research achievements, and explore new pathways for innovation. The event aimed to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and advance technological innovation in unconventional reservoir petrophysics and logging technologies. The opening ceremony was presided over by Zhao Hui, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Yangtze University Committee and Vice President of the University.

President Liu Yongsheng delivered a welcome address, introducing the university’s development, educational strengths, and distinctive features in geophysics. He expressed the hope that participating experts and scholars would engage in in-depth discussions, exchange ideas, inspire innovative thinking, and generate valuable outcomes, contributing new knowledge and expertise to the advancement of unconventional reservoir petrophysics and logging technologies.

Wang Hua, Chair of SPWLA-SW, delivered the association’s annual work report.

Hu Qiyue, Director of the Logging Professional Committee of the Chinese Petroleum Society; Chen Dehua, Director of the Borehole Geophysics Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society; Robert Gales, President of SPWLA International; and Harry Xie, former Technical Vice President of SPWLA, delivered remarks respectively, highly recognizing the academic significance of the forum and its role as an international platform for collaboration and exchange.

Academician Li Ning from the Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) delivered a keynote report entitled “CIFLog: The First Large-Scale Logging Industrial Processing Software Supporting Domestic CPUs, Operating Systems, and Databases.” He introduced the latest achievements of the software in domestic adaptation, technological breakthroughs, and independent innovation. During the event, Academician Li Ning donated the CIFLog logging industrial processing software to Yangtze University amid warm applause.

The three-day conference featured a comprehensive and intensive program, including 19 invited keynote presentations covering a wide range of topics from fundamental theories to industrial applications. In addition, seven thematic sessions and six student forums were organized, with more than 100 presentations and discussions focusing on nine major areas, including petrophysics, artificial intelligence applications, and emerging logging technologies.

During the conference, the SPWLA International Student Paper Contest — Yangtze University Division Preliminary Competition was held. Professor Wang Hua from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, experts from China Oilfield Services Limited (COSL), distinguished Yangtze University alumnus Zhao Xianran, Austrian expert Christian Rambousek, Professor Guan Wei from Harbin Institute of Technology, and other renowned experts and scholars served as judges. Following the competition, Harry Xie, former Technical Vice President of SPWLA, provided detailed guidance and advice to the participating students.

Participants noted that the forum established a high-level platform for academic dialogue and collaboration among researchers worldwide. It further enhanced exchanges and mutual learning in unconventional reservoir petrophysics and logging evaluation technologies, making significant contributions to technological advancement and innovative development in the exploration and utilization of unconventional oil and gas resources in China.
