The 19th National Conference on Organic Geochemistry was held at the Donghu International Conference Center in Wuhan from November 14 to 17. The conference was jointly organized by the Petroleum Geology Committee of the Chinese Petroleum Society and the Sedimentology Committee of the Chinese Society of Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry, and hosted by Yangtze University. The conference brought together more than 900 researchers, industry experts, faculty members, and students from universities, research institutes, and petroleum enterprises across China to exchange ideas and discuss the latest advances in organic geochemistry and related disciplines.
The opening ceremony was chaired by by Academician Zhang Shuichang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS). Opening remarks were delivered by Kuang Lichun, Chair of the Petroleum Geology Committee of the Chinese Petroleum Society, and Liu Yongsheng, President of Yangtze University.
The conference featured 24 plenary presentations, with the plenary session chaired by Academician Guo Xusheng of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Six academicians delivered keynote lectures: Academician Jia Chengzao (CAS), Academician Sun Longde (CAE), Academician Jin Zhijun (CAS), Academician Zhao Wenzhi (CAE), Academician Liu He (CAE), and Academician Xie Shucheng (CAS). Their presentations covered cutting-edge topics including the full petroleum system theory, deep‑earth hydrocarbon exploration, natural hydrogen, and shale oil flow mechanisms.
Other distinguished speakers also shared their research findings, including Professor Li Maowen and Director Shen Baojian from Sinopec Petroleum Exploration and Production Research Institute; Professor Feng Zihui from PetroChina Daqing Oilfield Company; Deputy Chief Geologist Hou Yuting from PetroChina Changqing Oilfield Company; Professor Tang Yong from Xinjiang Research Institute of Huairou National Laboratory; Professor Cao Yingchang from China University of Petroleum (East China); Professor Hou Dujie from China University of Geosciences (Beijing); Professor Liu Quanyou from Peking University; Professor Wang Xiaomei from PetroChina Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration & Development; Professors Cao Jian and Zhang Feifei from Nanjing University; Research Professors Jia Wanglu and Cheng Peng from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Professor Tan Jingqiang from Central South University; Professor Luo Qingyong and Associate Professor Song Daofu from China University of Petroleum (Beijing); and Professors Xu Yaohui and Huang Haiping from Yangtze University. Their presentations covered diverse topics spanning energy exploration and geological history.
Following a rigorous review by the conference's Academic Committee, the Organic Geochemistry Lifetime Achievement Award and the inaugural Organic Geochemistry Young Scientist Award were presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field.
Lin Renzi, former President of Jianghan Petroleum Institute, former Director of its Analytical and Testing Research Center, alumnus of Yangtze University, and Professor at China University of Petroleum (Beijing), received the 2025 Organic Geochemistry Lifetime Achievement Award. Since the award's establishment, only eight scientists nationwide have received this distinction. The inaugural Organic Geochemistry Young Scientist Award was presented to Cheng Peng, Research Professor at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and a 2008 alumnus of Yangtze University, and Luo Qingyong, Professor at China University of Petroleum (Beijing). In addition, 43 early-career researchers received awards for Outstanding Young Scholar Papers and Outstanding Poster Presentations.
The conference received 592 research abstracts, while its online livestream attracted more than 170,000 views, with the conference photo livestream recording over 100,000 page views, both setting new records for the event.
As one of the flagship academic events of the Chinese Petroleum Society and a key conference recognized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the National Conference on Organic Geochemistry serves as China's premier forum for academic exchange and scientific collaboration in the field of organic geochemistry.
