On the morning of May 12, Academician Zhang Qi, member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, delivered an academic lecture titled “Policy Frameworks, Regulatory Systems, and Techno-Economic Analysis of Sino-Russian Energy Cooperation” at the 73rd Yangtze Forum.
Vice President Jiang Houshun, the Dean of the School of Petroleum Engineering, along with faculty and students from relevant disciplines, attended the academic report.
Commencing with an analysis of the global energy landscape and the strategic context of Sino-Russian collaboration, Academician Zhang Qi provided a comprehensive examination of policy frameworks, technological innovations, and economic efficiencies in bilateral cooperation across oil and gas, nuclear power, and LNG sectors. He highlighted landmark projects such as the Natural Gas Pipeline of China-Russia Eastern Route, Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, and Yamal LNG Project, which exemplify technological complementarity and mutual economic benefits. These initiatives not only inject new momentum into both nations’ energy strategies, but also establish an exemplary model for global energy collaboration.
In response to cooperation challenges such as Western technology embargoes and currency fluctuations, Academician Zhang Qi emphasized the necessity of enhancing joint R&D initiatives and establishing currency swap agreements, to solidify policy and technological foundations for sustainable energy collaboration. He further envisioned substantial potential in future endeavors including Arctic oil and gas exploration, hydrogen energy corridor development, and the “Polar Silk Road” initiative.
During the lively Q&A session, faculty and students raised a series of questions concerning green energy transition, Sino-Russian technological co-innovation, and policy coordination mechanisms in international energy cooperation. Academician Zhang Qi drew upon his research expertise to provide detailed responses to each inquiry.
At the conclusion of the lecture, student representatives presented flowers to Academician Zhang Qi, while Vice President Jiang Houshun conferred upon him the “Yangtze Forum” commemorative cup in recognition of his academic contributions.
