Yangtze University has been selected for the 2026 Innovative Talent International Cooperation Program sponsored by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). The University's proposed project, International Collaborative Program for Innovative Talent Development in Green and Intelligent Oil and Gas Development, has been officially approved, marking the first national-level international collaborative talent development initiative in the University's Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline.
Designed to support China's energy security and the national Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality ("Dual Carbon") strategy, the program focuses on cultivating innovative professionals equipped to advance the green and intelligent transformation of the oil and gas industry.
Coordinated by the Office of International Affairs and led by Professor Li Zhonghui of the College of Petroleum Engineering, the project will leverage Yangtze University's strengths in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, one of Hubei Province's first-class disciplines. In collaboration with five leading universities and research institutions in the United States, Canada, Russia, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, the program will establish an international talent cultivation platform that integrates cutting-edge global technologies with the evolving needs of China's energy industry.
Guided by national strategic priorities, the project adopts a joint training model that promotes collaboration among universities, industry partners, and local governments. Through international academic exchange, university–industry cooperation, and cross-sector partnerships, the program aims to cultivate high-caliber professionals while translating frontier research into practical solutions for China's oilfields.
Under the program, four outstanding doctoral and master's students, together with young faculty members, will be selected each year to undertake academic training and research at overseas partner institutions. Their studies will focus on strategic areas including intelligent oil and gas development, advanced drilling technologies, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). International research teams will jointly address key technological challenges in areas such as carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂-EOR) and intelligent oilfield development, fostering both talent development and scientific innovation.
Over the years, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline at Yangtze University has aligned its research and education with China's energy security priorities and the Dual Carbon strategy. Supported by national and provincial research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Low-carbon Catalysis and Carbon Dioxide Utilization, the discipline has achieved sustained progress in carbon dioxide utilization and storage, intelligent oilfield development, and other key technologies while continuously strengthening talent cultivation and scientific research.
According to the leadership of the College of Petroleum Engineering, the newly approved program will further expand the University's high-level international partnerships, enhance the integration of disciplinary and research resources, and translate its academic strengths into technological advances for the energy industry. The initiative is expected to provide strong talent and intellectual support for the continued development of the University's first-class Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering discipline.
