The College of Animal Science and Technology at Yangtze University was founded in 1985 and was formerly affiliated with the former Hubei Agricultural College. It has gone through the departments of animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, aquaculture, special biology research, animal husbandry, and animal science. In 2003, it was merged into the newly established Yangtze University and renamed as the "College of Animal Science at Yangtze University". In 2023, the college was renamed as the "College of Animal Science and Technology at Yangtze University".
The college has departments of animal medicine, aquaculture, animal science, animal clinical hospital, eel base, ostrich research institute and other teaching and research bases. It currently has three undergraduate majors in animal medicine, animal science and aquaculture, three first level master's degree programs in biology, aquaculture and animal husbandry, a first level master's degree program in veterinary medicine, and two second level master's degree programs in fishery development and animal husbandry.
The college has a high-level faculty team. The college currently has 77 faculty members, including 56 full-time teachers, including 14 professors, 30 associate professors, and 47 doctoral degree holders.There are 8 doctoral supervisors and 45 master's supervisors, forming a team of graduate supervisors with complete disciplinary directions and strong overall strength. In the past five years, the college has selected one scientist for the position of germplasm resources and variety improvement of eels and loaches under the Ministry of Agriculture, introduced four third class talents from Yangtze University, and 11 doctoral students (including seven A-level talents). One high-end scholar, one leading scholar, four elite scholars, one special professor, and one young outstanding talent have been selected for Yangtze University.
The college currently has a total of 1256 students (988 undergraduate students and 268 graduate students). The major ofanimalmedicine andaquaculture has been selected for the Excellent Agriculture and Forestry Talent Training Program by the Ministry of Education. Aquaculture is a brand major and a first-class undergraduate major in Hubei Province,china,and is a key discipline in Hubei Province.
Based on the college, there are several engineering research centers established by the Ministry of Education, including the Wetland Ecology and Agricultural Utilization Engineering Research Center ((for the research direction of wetland aquaculture health), Hubei Engineering Laboratory for Eel Breeding and Breeding Technology, and Hubei Engineering Technology Center for Aquatic Economic Animals in Higher Education Institutions. The college cooperates with Huazhong Agricultural University and Wuhan University of Light Industry to jointly establish the Hubei Province Collaborative Innovation Center for Freshwater Aquatic Health Aquaculture, and cooperates with Yichang Zhengda Feed Co., Ltd. OfCP GROUP to jointly establish a provincial-level internship and training demonstration base for Hubei universities. More than 50 well-known domestic and foreign enterprises such as CP GROUP, Muyuan Co., Ltd., Dabeinong Agriculture, Wenshi Group, and Tongwei Group have established stable cooperative relationships with the college, becoming the college's practical teaching base and employment base.
In the past five years, college teachers have led over 200 scientific research projects at all levels and types, including National Natural Science Foundation projects and Hubei Provincial Key R&D projects. Obtained 2 first prizes, 5 second prizes, and 7 third prizes for scientific and technological progress in Hubei Province, with an average annual research funding of over 5 million yuan.The college have published more than 50 monographs and edited textbooks, obtained more than 50 national invention patents and international patents, and published over 1000 high-level papers. It has formed certain characteristics and advantages in the fields of famous aquaculture such as eels, shrimp and crabs, livestock and poultry nutrition and breeding, livestock and poultry disease detection and prevention.
