In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the former Jianghan Petroleum Institute, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Health Workers College were merged to form Yangtze University, and the School of Computer Science was established. The school currently offers four undergraduate programs: Computer Science and Technology, Network Engineering, Software Engineering and Intelligent Science and Technology. It has a first-level discipline master's degree authorization point in Computer Science and Technology, a master's degree program in Computer Technology and a master’s degree program in Electronic Information. The discipline of Computer Science and Technology is a key discipline (characteristic discipline) of Hubei Province during the 12th Five-Year Plan and entered the characteristic discipline group of Hubei Province during the 14th Five-Year Plan. The Network Engineering major is a national first-class undergraduate major construction point, and the Computer Science and Technology major and the Software Engineering major are first-class undergraduate major construction points of Hubei Province. The Network Engineering teaching team is a Hubei Provincial Teaching Team, and the Computer Science and Technology Teaching and Research Section is an outstanding grassroots teaching organization of Hubei Province. The school has been awarded titles such as “Advanced Grassroots Party Organization of Hubei Province’s Higher Education Institutions” and “Advanced Grassroots Unit of Ideological and Political Education Work in Hubei Province’s Higher Education Institutions”. Currently, there are more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students from home and abroad.

The college consists of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, the Department of Network Engineering, the Department of Software Engineering, the Department of Intelligent Science and Technology, and the University Computer Teaching Department, which are respectively responsible for the professional teaching of the college and the public computer courses for the entire university. Currently, the college has three research institutions: the Institute of Resource Information Application Technology jointly established with Beijing Jurassic Software Co., Ltd., the Institute of Reservoir Information of Yangtze University, and the Logging Technology Research Institute jointly established with Jingpeng Software Group. The college also has research teams in big data application technology, Internet of Things intelligent application technology, network security, and graphic image technology. At present, the college has a total of 93 faculty and staff members, including 8 professors, 37 associate professors; 29 teachers with doctoral degrees, 56 teachers with master's degrees, and 1 teacher pursuing a doctoral degree; and 37 full-time master's supervisors.

The college has two central and local co-built experimental centers, namely the Computer Experiment Teaching Center and the Interactive Multimedia Experiment Center. These centers are equipped with laboratories such as the Hardware Technology Laboratory, Embedded System Laboratory, Software Engineering Laboratory, Network Engineering Laboratory, Virtual Reality Laboratory, Comprehensive Cabling Center, Mobile Internet Laboratory, Information Security Laboratory, Intelligent Science and Technology Comprehensive Laboratory, and Cloud Computing and Big Data Laboratory. They can meet the teaching requirements of computer software and hardware experiments, network experiments, course design, and graduation design for various majors, as well as the basic needs of teachers for scientific research. There are already research platforms such as intelligent computing, intelligent clusters, network attack and defense, and WEB software testing. A new artificial intelligence research platform has been jointly built with iFLYTEK, and the "Internet of Things Big Data Laboratory Open Center" has been jointly established with the Jingzhou Science and Technology Bureau. Through the construction of laboratories and discipline platforms, the college has formed distinctive research directions in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, big data, data processing and visualization technology, network technology and information security, petroleum application software development, and reservoir and resource information processing, and these directions are gradually stabilizing.

Since its establishment, the college has carried forward the excellent traditions and educational concepts of the original four schools, always adhering to the principle that teaching quality is the lifeline, with discipline construction as the leading factor, with the construction of the teaching staff as the core, with research as the guide, with professional construction as the main thread, with curriculum construction as the focus, and with the construction of laboratories and practical sections as the guarantee, continuously improving the quality of talent cultivation. Since its establishment, the graduate employment rate for postgraduate studies has been continuously increasing, and a number of students have been admitted to prestigious universities such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, etc. Students have won multiple awards in national college mathematics modeling, computer simulation competitions, English competitions, electronic design competitions, and embedded competitions. In the past five years, the college has undertaken more than 120 projects including national natural science funds, Hubei provincial natural science funds, major scientific research projects of Hubei Provincial Education Department, national major science and technology projects, and various commissioned projects from enterprises and institutions. The annual average research funds have reached over 9 million yuan. The college has won 6 provincial (ministerial) science and technology achievements awards, published over 30 books and textbooks, publicly published over 600 papers, obtained more than 50 types of intellectual property rights, and won 2 provincial teaching achievements awards, 7 provincial teaching research projects, 1 national first-class course, and 9 provincial first-class courses.
