The College of Education and Sports Sciences (including the College of Teacher Education) at Yangtze University was formed from the former College of Education and the College of Physical Education. Currently, the college has 120 faculty and staff members, including 105 full-time teachers. Among them are 10 professors and 47 associate professors; 23 hold doctoral degrees, and 6 are currently pursuing their doctorates. The college includes 30 master's supervisors and 2 part-time doctoral supervisors. Notably, 2 faculty members have received the Tsang Hin-chi Education Fund Award, 1 has been selected for the third tier of Hubei Province's New Century High-Level Talent Project, 2 have been recognized as Outstanding Young Social Science Talents in Hubei Province, and 2 have been honored as provincial-level Excellent Teachers. Additionally, the college has 5 international-level referees and 6 national-level referees. Nineteen faculty members have engaged in academic visits or training at renowned overseas universities. The full-time teaching staff comprises graduates from over 20 prestigious institutions and research institutes, including the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Central China Normal University, Beijing Sport University, and Wuhan Sports University.
The college offers six undergraduate programs: Applied Psychology (since 2001), Education (since 2005), Preschool Education (since 2011), Physical Education (since 1999), Social Sports Guidance and Management (since 2003), and Sports Training (since 2024). It holds master's degree authorization in the first-level disciplines of Education (since 2010) and Sports Science (since 2021), and offers professional master's programs in Sports (since 2009), Education (since 2019), and Applied Psychology (since 2024). The college has established a provincial-level key (cultivation) discipline in the first-level discipline of Education (since 2012) and a university-level superior and characteristic discipline cluster titled "Modern Education and Jingchu Culture Studies" (since 2016). Organizationally, the college comprises the Department of Education, Department of Psychology, Department of Preschool Education, Department of Physical Education, Department of Social Sports (Sports Training), University Physical Education Teaching Division, University Student Sports Competition Division, Wuhan Campus Sports Center, and the Applied Psychology Experimental Teaching Center. It also houses several university-level research institutions, including the Psychological Education and Training Research Center for Reserve Forces, Teacher Education Research Center, Physical Education Research Center, and Jingchu Sports Culture Research Center. The college has developed stable research and talent cultivation directions in areas such as Principles of Education, Higher Education, Curriculum and Teaching Theory, Preschool Education, Teacher Education, Educational Psychology, Sports Pedagogy and Training, Physical Education Instruction, Sports Training, and Social Sports Guidance.
Since 2015, faculty members have led 109 research projects at the provincial level and above, including 8 National Social Science Fund projects, 10 Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Science Fund projects, 3 National Education Science Planning projects, 3 projects from the General Administration of Sport of China, 1 project from the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 project from the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, 7 Hubei Provincial Social Science Fund projects, 1 Ministry of Education university teaching laboratory safety project, and 9 Hubei Provincial Higher Education teaching research projects. The total funding for provincial-level and above vertical projects amounts to 3.41 million yuan. Faculty have published 74 monographs and edited or co-edited 23 textbooks. A total of 863 academic papers have been published, including 45 indexed in CSSCI, 138 in core journals, and 23 in international journals. The college has received numerous accolades, including a third prize in the National Education Science Research Outstanding Achievement Awards, a first and two third prizes in the Hubei Provincial Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards, a first and second prize in the National Petroleum University Sports Science Achievement Awards, one Hubei Provincial Higher Education Humanities and Social Science Research Outstanding Achievement Award, four Hubei Provincial Excellent Higher Education Research Achievement Awards, and two Hubei Provincial Education Science Research Outstanding Achievement Awards. Additionally, 17 domestic utility model patents have been granted.
The college upholds the principle of moral education and adopts a comprehensive, multi-channel approach to student development. It has established a talent cultivation system based on the "Three Basics, Four Realities, One Innovation, and Two Abilities" philosophy: "Three Basics" refer to fundamental theories, knowledge, and skills; "Four Realities" emphasize a solid foundation, honesty, simplicity, and pragmatism; "One Innovation" encourages innovative spirit; and "Two Abilities" focus on practical and adaptive capabilities. Students have achieved notable successes, including a national third prize and a provincial special prize in the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, as well as second and third prizes in the Hubei Provincial College Student Excellent Research Achievement Awards. In teaching skills competitions for normal university students, they have secured second and third prizes at the provincial level. The college's sports teams have excelled in various competitions, winning 110 first-place, 113 second-place, and 119 third-place awards at provincial and national levels. The dragon boat team achieved second place in the men's group and third in the women's group at the 7th National College Student Dragon Boat Championship in 2018, and fourth place in both the 100m and 200m events in the youth group at the 2019 China Dragon Boat Race. The sports dance and aerobics teams have repeatedly won first place in national competitions. The university has been designated by the General Administration of Sport of China as a national "Sunshine Line Dance Initiative in Schools" demonstration and reserve base. The volleyball team secured fifth and fourth places in the 12th and 13th China University Beach Volleyball Championships in 2016 and 2017, respectively. In 2015, the basketball team won the first place in the Hubei Province CUBA Sunshine Group and advanced to the national finals. The badminton team has claimed the Hubei Provincial College Student Singles Championship, and the table tennis team achieved runner-up in the men's team event at the Hubei Provincial Games.
The college is committed to serving local educational reform and regional socio-economic development. It actively engages in industry-university-research cooperative education, signing agreements with local education and sports departments, enterprises, and research institutions to establish talent training bases. The college assists local governments in formulating educational development plans, cultivating outstanding graduates, and facilitating the establishment of various scholarships by partner institutions. Since 2014, the college has annually undertaken training tasks under the Ministry of Education's "National Training Plan" and the Hubei Provincial Department of Education's "Provincial Training Plan," training over 2,500 individuals, with training outcomes ranking among the top in third-party evaluations within the province. Leveraging its disciplinary strengths, the college has collaborated with military units to conduct 15 training sessions for reserve officers on "public opinion and legal struggles and psychological offense and defense." It has guided primary and secondary schools in Jingzhou City to effectively implement mental health education, training over 1,000 key mental health teachers and conducting more than 20 pre-exam psychological counseling lectures for high school and middle school entrance examinations. The college actively promotes the construction of national fitness stations, organizing community-based sports activities and providing volunteer and fitness guidance services. It also participates in physical training for local primary and secondary schools, officiates various sports competitions, and undertakes social service projects such as national physical fitness testing, the national sports industry directory survey, and sports venue investigations.
