The School of Marxism was established in May 2011 as an independent teaching and research institution under the guidance of the Regulations on Further Strengthening the Construction of Ideological and Political Theory Course Faculty in Higher Education Institutions issued by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Ministry of Education. It was separated from the former School of Politics and Law at Yangtze University. The school is responsible for delivering ideological and political theory courses to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as overseeing the discipline development and talent cultivation for the "Ideological and Political Education" bachelor’s program and the "Marxist Theory" first-level master’s program. In 2018, the school was designated as a Hubei Provincial Demonstration Base for Ideological and Political Education, and in 2023, it was selected as a Leading Institution for the Hubei Provincial Demonstration Zone for Integrated Ideological and Political Education across Primary, Secondary, and Higher Education.
The school comprises 11 teaching departments, including the Department of Political Science, and 6 research centers: the Center for Comparative Studies of Chinese and Western Philosophy and Civilizations, the Center for Ecological Civilization Studies, the Center for Integrity Construction, the Center for Ideological and Political Education, the Center for Red Letters Research and Communication, and the Center for Energy Strategy and Energy Diplomacy. Facilities include a VR Virtual Simulation Laboratory, a Classic Literature Reading Room (housing over 5,000 books), and a Journal Reading Room (featuring over 200 professional journals). The school has established over 30 off-campus educational practice bases and graduate workstations. Currently, it employs 120 full-time faculty members and 9 adjunct faculty members, including 57 specializing in Marxist Theory and Ideological and Political Education. Among them, there are 11 professors, 27 associate professors, 23 doctoral degree holders, and 35 master’s supervisors. The school enrolls 340 full-time undergraduates (including dual-degree students) and 195 graduate students (including part-time).
Guided by the educational philosophy of "Three R and Three S( Respect Students,Respect Scholarship and Respect Talent Student-Oriented, Scholars First and Scholarship as the Cornerstone)" and the governance strategy of "Three Essentials in All Matters( Everything has rules to follow, Clear accountability for all tasks,Orderly advancement of all initiatives)", the school upholds the spirit of "Cultivating Virtue, Fostering Innovation". It has developed a distinctive development framework centered on Marxist discipline construction, supported by ideological and political theory course development, focused on enhancing teaching and research quality, and driven by high-caliber faculty and talent cultivation. Leveraging resources such as the Hubei Provincial Demonstration Base for Ideological and Political Education, the Hubei Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Program in Ideological and Political Education, the National First-Class Undergraduate Course "Life of the Yangtze River", and provincial-level teaching teams, the school adheres to the principle of "Comprehensive Planning, Step-by-Step Implementation, Key Breakthroughs, and Sustainable Development" to strengthen its academic competitiveness. Over the years, the school has established a focused, distinctive, and multi-tiered disciplinary structure in four secondary research areas: Basic Principles of Marxism, Sinicization of Marxism, Ideological and Political Education, and Research on Basic Issues of Modern Chinese History.
