The College of Life Sciences of Yangtze University was established in January 2002. The college has 56 full-time faculty members, including 14 professors, 24 associate professors and 30 postgraduate supervisors, in which including 8 doctoral supervisors.

The college consists of two major departments: the department of biology and the department of food. The department of biology includes two majors in biotechnology and bioengineering, and the department of food includes two majors in food science and engineering and food quality and safety. The biotechnology major was approved for the construction of a first-class major in Hubei Province in 2020, and it was approved for the construction of a national first-class undergraduate major in 2021. In 2021, the ecology course was approved for the construction of a first-class course in Hubei Province. The college has three first-level discipline master's programs in biology, ecology and food science and engineering, and professional master's degree programs in biology and medicine, agronomy and seed industry, food processing and safety.

In recent 5 years, the college has undertaken 72 National and Provincial scientific research projects, including 23 National Natural Science Foundation of China, won 1 second-class National Technological Invention award, 4 national and provincial scientific research awards, published more than 20 monographs and textbooks, and obtained 39 authorized patents. Published 396 scientific research papers in core journals such as SCI index journals. Among them, the chicken infectious bursal virus genetic engineering subunit vaccine, porcine circovirus type II genetic engineering subunit vaccine, and porcine circovirus type 2 ELISA antibody detection kit obtained the second and third class new veterinary drug registration certificate of the Ministry of Agriculture, respectively, and were put into production.

The College attaches great importance to academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation at home and abroad. Currently, it has established a Joint Laboratory of Toxicology between China and The Czech Republic. Students have been sent to the Czech Republic, the United States and Canada for exchange visits, and well-known professors from Germany, the Czech Republic, the United States and Taiwan have been invited to give lectures and carry out cooperation and exchanges. At the same time, it has established a cooperative relationship with more than 40 well-known enterprises inside and outside the province.
